CBS Sunday Morning: 'Art on the Mall: American Diversity on Display'

“CBS Sunday Morning”: Art on the mall

“CBS Sunday Morning” featured the groundbreaking art exhibition on the National Mall, Beyond Granite: Pulling Together, exploring the diverse American stories told through art on America’s Civic Stage. You can visit Beyond Granite at sites across the National Mall now through September 18. Plan your visit here.

This historic exhibition, supported by the Mellon Foundation, is part of the Beyond Granite initiative, an example of the Trust's growing area of work with the National Park Service to create programming and educational experiences to ensure a vibrant and engaging National Mall for all.

Faith Salie and "CBS Sunday Morning" joined us to explore the inaugural installation of Beyond Granite, entitled Pulling Together. Faith toured the exhibit and spoke with the artists and curators, along with the Trust and the National Park Service, about the stories and perspectives brought to life in this first-of-its-kind exhibit on the National Mall.

“For over a century, monuments on the National Mall in Washington DC have inspired us to witness, remember, revere...now (through Beyond Granite) we are invited to ring, sing and swing…what better gallery of art than one that is ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.’”

- Faith Salie, “CBS Sunday Morning”

The Beyond Granite initiative is focused on exploring how temporary art installations can use the platform of the nation's commemorative canvas to create vibrancy and broaden the dialogue in conversation with the monuments and memorials. Beyond Granite is led by the Trust for the National Mall in partnership with the National Park Service and the National Capital Planning Commission. The Beyond Granite: Pulling Together exhibition, curated by Paul Farber and Salamishah Tillet for Monument Lab, is centered around the question, “what stories remain untold on the National Mall.” The Trust is grateful to the many partners, collaborators, artists and champions who helped make this inaugural exhibition possible.

Make your plans to visit now through September 18* at BeyondGranite.org.

The Trust is grateful for all who support our work to restore, preserve and elevate the National Mall. You can make a gift to support our work and programs like Beyond Granite here.
